Ozone Treatment Safety Instructions

Last updated: May 11, 2026

Ozone (O3) is an effective sanitizer that breaks down odors and many microorganisms. It is also a powerful oxidizer that, at elevated concentrations, can irritate the respiratory tract. The steps below are designed to make your treatment effective and safe for you, your passengers, and your vehicle. Please read and follow them in full.

A note before you book.

If you have asthma, chronic respiratory disease, severe ozone or chemical sensitivity, an immunocompromised condition, or are pregnant, consult a physician before scheduling ozone treatment. Contact us if you are unsure whether ozone treatment is appropriate for your situation.

1. Before treatment

  • Remove all living things from the vehicle (people, pets, plants).
  • Remove perishable food and any items that may be sensitive to oxidation, such as live plants, opened cosmetics, leather goods with delicate dyes, or rubber/latex items of high sentimental value.
  • Sensitive electronics (dashcams, GPS units, etc.) may remain installed; the ozone levels we use do not typically affect them. If you prefer, you may remove or cover them.
  • Inform us in advance of any medical devices, oxygen equipment, biological samples, prescription medication, or unusual contents inside the vehicle.
  • Park the vehicle in a location where it can sit closed for approximately 30 to 60 minutes, followed by a 15 to 20 minute ventilation period in fresh air.

2. During treatment

DO NOT enter, open, or sit inside the vehicle while the ozone generator is running.

The vehicle will be locked or clearly marked “OZONE TREATMENT IN PROGRESS - DO NOT ENTER.”

  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance from the vehicle.
  • Avoid spending time in enclosed spaces immediately adjacent to the vehicle (closed single-car garages, etc.). Open-air or well-ventilated environments are strongly preferred.
  • Our technician monitors the generator and the surrounding environment throughout the cycle and will end treatment immediately if any safety concern is identified.

3. After treatment - ventilation is mandatory

This is the most important safety step. Failure to ventilate properly may cause respiratory irritation.

  • After the generator stops, leave all doors and windows open for at least 15 to 20 minutes before anyone enters the cabin.
  • If practical, run the climate-control system on the highest fan setting with the windows down for an additional 5 to 10 minutes to flush residual ozone from the ducts.
  • Do not drive the vehicle with all windows fully closed for at least 30 minutes after the generator stops.
  • A faint metallic or “fresh-after-rain” odor is normal and dissipates within 24 hours. If the odor remains strong or you experience irritation, open all windows and continue to ventilate until it clears.

4. Health precautions

The following individuals should avoid entering the vehicle for at least 24 hours after treatment, even after full ventilation:

  • People with asthma, COPD, or other chronic respiratory conditions.
  • People with severe ozone or chemical sensitivity.
  • Pregnant individuals (consult your physician before any exposure).
  • Infants and very young children.
  • Anyone currently recovering from a respiratory illness or with an immunocompromised condition.

5. If you experience symptoms

If, after entering the vehicle following treatment, you experience persistent coughing, throat irritation, chest tightness, shortness of breath, or a headache that does not clear with fresh air:

  • Stop using the vehicle and step outside into open air.
  • Open all doors and windows and let the cabin air out further.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.

6. Possible material effects

Ozone is highly reactive. At concentrations higher than we typically use, it can in rare cases cause:

  • Mild softening, hardening, or yellowing of certain rubber and silicone seals (most commonly on very old vehicles).
  • Fading of some sensitive dyes on textiles or leather, particularly previously oxidized surfaces.
  • Acceleration of the natural aging of already-deteriorating materials.

Our standard treatment uses concentrations and exposure times below the threshold for these effects in normal automotive interiors. By accepting Service you accept the small residual risk that rapid oxidative sanitization may affect particularly sensitive or aged materials. We are happy to discuss your specific vehicle prior to booking if you have concerns.

7. Emergency contacts

In the event of suspected severe ozone exposure (severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting): call 911 immediately.

For non-emergency medical concerns related to chemical exposure, contact California Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
